Getting started
Your first simulation
A LensaSim simulation is built in the order a process engineer thinks: the chemistry first, then the flowsheet, then what the results mean. The left rail takes you through it, one environment at a time.
The environments
- Properties — the components in your process and the property method that describes them.
- Simulation — the flowsheet: blocks from the palette, the streams between them, and the Inspector where each one is specified. Run solves it.
- Analysis — stream tables, profiles, case studies, convergence, messages and reports.
- Energy, Economics, Safety and Dynamics — pinch analysis, costing, hazards and relief, and the plant through time. Each works on the solved flowsheet.
Building a flowsheet, step by step
- In Properties, search the databank and click each component to add it — by name, formula or CAS number. Then pick a property method; the panel suggests one for the components you chose.
- Go to Simulation. Drag a Feed from the palette and give it a temperature, pressure, flow and composition in the Inspector.
- Add the blocks your process needs — a heater, a flash drum, a reactor, a column — and connect them by dragging from an outlet port to an inlet port. End every outlet in a Product.
- Specify each block in the Inspector. A block that still needs something says what.
- Press Run. Click any stream or block to read its results; the bottom panel holds the stream table and the messages.
Units are chosen at the top of Properties — Metric (°C, kPa), SI (K, kPa) or US Field (°F, psia) — and change only what you see: the flowsheet and its results are the same in all three.
Ways to learn it
- The tutorial — “Start the tutorial” in the top bar builds a distillation column with you, one step at a time.
- Worked examples — the Examples menu opens finished flowsheets: distillation, ammonia synthesis, reactors, solids, bioprocesses and more. Open one, run it and change it.
- Lessons — guided lessons for school, university and industry, with questions that check you understood.
- The guide — “Guide on” in the top bar shows what to do next in each environment.
Saving and sharing your work
- Save keeps a project in your browser; Open brings it back. Free plans keep five, Pro keeps as many as you like.
- Export downloads the project as a file and Import opens one — the way to move work between computers or hand it to someone, on any plan.
- On Pro, signed in, projects sync to your account and a share link gives anyone a read-only copy. Publishing to LensaSim Connect puts a design on your public portfolio.
